The true story of one of World War II's most spectacular aerial battles
The Kassel bombing raid of Sept. 27, 1944, began as what many bomber veterans like to call a "milk run." It ended with a battle between 35 B-24 Liberators and between 100 and 150 German fighter planes that bombardier George Collar, one of the survivors, likened to the aerial battle in the movie "Wings" as he parachuted to earth. "Wings" was the first movie to win the Academy Award for best picture, in 1927.
This web site is devoted to the survivors of the Kassel Mission, the memory of those who were lost, and the preservation of the Kassel Mission Memorial in Friedlos, Germany.
