Message: My father, Truman "Bud" Griswold, was a co-pilot in the 445th at the time of this mission. He never spoke much of about his service in WWII. He did mention "The Sweetest Rose of Texas" once...so perhaps he was on that plane that made it home that fateful day. All I can say is I'm lucky to be here today.

Message: My husband was born in Kassel on September 5, 1944. Shortly after he was born, his grandmother pulled her daughter and grandson out of the local hospital feeling it was not a safe place....later ( don't know exactly when but it could have been during the mission ) the hospital was bombarded and leveled. My husband is today a retired US Department of Defense employee who retired not only on a high post but also with the highest award ever awarded to a civilian working for DOD. We consider it a miracle that this little boy lived and later prooved to be an autstanding US citizen and employee of US DOD. Our prayers go to all fallen soldiers and civilians. Katie

Message: Thank you for this invaluable web site. I have been researching
my father's line and was amazed to find a cousin who served
in WWII and afterwards. S/SGt Francis Barnish served in the
Air Force until 1961. I was dismayed to read that his plane was shot down during the Kassel mission and many of his crewman perished. I can only thank the men for their service to our country and cherish their memories and their contributions.

Message: Today I came across your site where I learned about the Kassel Mission. I was about 12 years old then, visiting my mother in Brotterode from A Boarding school in Schleusingen when one Bomber went down near that town. It was an obvious attempted crashlanding in a small green valley between two wooded hills. A German soldier was posted at that site. I do not remember anything about the fate of the crew. But some of my friends and I crawled over the wreck and I managed to retrieve a solenoid from the fuselage. I had no idea that so many planes went down in a matter of minutes. Thank you for creating this site.
